Who Should Take the Course?

Servers, Bartenders, Hostesses and Food and Beverage Managers, Retail staff, as well as security staff must be Smart Serve Certified by law in Ontario. The Smart Serve training program is designed to educate you about responsible alcohol service.

Duration: 4 hours

Age Requirement: None

Important Note:

You must be 18 years or older to sell, serve, handle or deliver alcohol within Ontario.

Certification valid throughout Ontario and expires after 5 years.

Exam consists of 33 multiple choice questions and a passing grade of 80% is required for certification

$70.00 + HST per Person. (Workshop, Study Guide, Practice Exam and Online Exam Token all included).

Course Overview

The Smart Serve responsible sales, service and delivery training programs are approved by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) as an official responsible liquor training program for Ontario. Smart Serve is a dedicated advocate for a safer and healthier Ontario.

This course is used as in class training in preparation for the Smart Serve Exam. Price includes exam token with two attempts. Upon completion of the course, participants will be guided on how to access their online modules and complete the online exam.

Smart Serve is the Government Certification required by law to sell or serve alcohol in Ontario. This program is designed for servers, bartenders, hostesses, food and beverage managers, or anyone who is involved in an event where alcohol is served.

This course covers topics such as: Types of licenses, legal rights, responsibilities and liabilities, how alcohol works in the body, signs of intoxication, forms of identification, as well as prevention and intervention techniques. If you do not pass the first time you can retake the test at no extra charge.

Upon completion of the course, students are provided with an online exam token which includes two attempts. It is the responsibility of the student to take the exam online. Exam tokens expire 30 days after in class study.

Udesh Priyanka Kurukulasuriya

Udesh Kurukulasuriya is a seasoned hospitality professional with over 12 years of experience in management, food and beverage operations, and staff training. He currently serves as a Hospitality Trainer and Administrative Manager at Talent Employment Inc. in Toronto, Ontario, where he develops future industry leaders while overseeing administrative functions. Previously, he was the Manager of Learning and Development at Hayleys Leisure in Colombo, Sri Lanka, leading training initiatives across 13 properties in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Udesh has also held significant roles in academia as an Assistant Lecturer at CINEC Campus in Malabe, Sri Lanka, where he effectively mentored aspiring hospitality professionals. His earlier career included various operational and managerial positions, such as Restaurant and Bar Manager at Ramada by Wyndham Colombo, and he was part of the pre-opening team at Shangri-La Colombo. He is a Certified Level 2 Trainer with the Singapore Training and Development Association (SCT 2) and holds an MBA from the University of West London, along with several other qualifications, including an Advanced Diploma in Teaching, Training, and Assessing Learning from The City & Guilds of London Institute. Udesh's commitment to continuous professional development and his numerous certifications reflect his dedication to enhancing service standards and nurturing talent in the hospitality industry.
